Trataba de escribir el artículo acerca de Florencia, pero con la vista espectacular que tengo es imposible concentrarse en otra ciudad, así que hablaremos de Atenas.
Atenas es una ciudad que soñaba con conocer. Moría por conocer el lugar donde la filosofía fue descubierta; donde Sócrates, Aristóteles, Plato, Parmenides, Heráclito, y muchos otros desarrollaron su pensamiento. Quería ver la Acrópolis, el Agora, caminar esas calles que hicieron que Pitágoras descubriera tantos conceptos, y saber si un poco de su esencia se quedaría conmigo.
Lo que veo, lo que se queda conmigo, lo que descubrí es: Que aún cuando algunos lugares son más conocidos, y su historia a sido mejor registrada; eso que los griegos descubrieron, eso que los griegos nombraron filosofía, es un ejercicio que el ser humano ha desarrollado en todo momento, pero con diversos nombres. Algo que sigue llevando de la mano a la humanidad, aún cuando no queramos nombrarla [Filosofía] y le pongamos muchos títulos diferentes: ciencia, física, matemáticas, tecnología. Al final, todas estas ramas son el resultado de la curiosidad del ser humano que forma su pensamiento, lo estudia, le da forma y lo presenta con el nombre que mejor le acomoda a su estudio, pero al final, eso que esta detrás de ese estudio es la curiosidad humana.
Tal vez mi ilusión de visitar esta ciudad comenzó hace más de 10 años; cuando comenzaba mis estudios en la universidad, y los primeros cursos que tomamos en la facultad de derecho fueron los de ética, derecho romano, historia del derecho, y otros más que ya no recuerdo. En estas clases era imposible no hacer referencia a la cultura griega, y, por su puesto, a Atenas. Entre los materiales que leímos recuerdo haber escuchado palabras como: República, Sofistas, Lecciones Preliminares de Filosofía, Democracia, etc., ¿y que seguía, cual era el sentimiento lógico que sigue después de leer tanto y aprender tanto de un lugar? Pues el tener la ilusión de conocer, de descubrir, de experimentar, y de sentir ese lugar.
En fin, aquí estoy, en esta ciudad, observando la Acropolis, el templo de Nike, la Biblioteca de Adrian, el Agora; recorriendo las mismas calles de aquellos tan nombrados filósofos, y escribiendo; y no puedo explicar la sensación de felicidad que tengo en este mismo instante. Así que lo que haré es compartir con ustedes como me siento.
Como en todas las ciudades que hemos visitado, hay tanto que decir; como en todas las ciudades que hemos visitado, lo que mas me sorprende es: en todos los lugares encuentras similitudes, pero al mismo tiempo, no hay dos ciudades iguales. Esto tiene lógica, si lo queremos poner en términos iniciados en Grecia. ¿Y lógica por que? pues porque las ciudades también evolucionan, también crecen, también viven. Sí, son como un ser viviente, si lo quieren decir, como un ser humano; por tanto, aunque compartiendo características que son esenciales a una ciudad/ser humano, no se encontrarán 2 iguales.
Ahora sí, después de jugar un poquito y filosofar, parare de divagar con mis sentimientos y pensamientos y hablaremos de esta ciudad.
Lo primero que verás cuando lleguen a Atenas es la Acropolis, y si todos los edificios no te dejan tener esta primera imagen, ¡búscala! Hay muchos lugares que tienen cafes, restaurants o bares en los techos de los edificios. No necesita ser un lugar caro, y en Atenas son muy buenos en eso de dejarte comprar un café, y pasar horas tomándolo y solo disfrutando la vista. Antes de hospedarnos en el penthouse, fuimos a Thea Bar solo para ver como atardece en la Acropolis. Es una imagen que se que quedarán conmigo por el resto de mi vida.
Una vez que hayas disfrutado La Acropolis de lejos, ahora si, compra tu boleto para visitar los sitios arqueológicos de Atenas y ve a todos los que puedas.
Hay muchos sitios arqueológicos en Atenas, y es mejor saber cuales quieres ver de antemano, por que, aún cuando es una ciudad para turistas, Atenas es la capital de Grecia y es una ciudad grande llena de opciones que puede llegar a ser abrumador no tener un plan. Pero si eres más aventurero, y tu estilo es nunca hacer planes, encontraras historia a cada paso que des. Solo caminando en la ciudad te percatarás del ingenio y el cuidado con el que Atenas a crecido en tamaño, tanto horizontalmente como verticalmente, cuidando las ruinas que están dispersas por toda la ciudad.
El museo de la Acropolis es un fino ejemplo de este respetuoso crecimiento. El museo esta construido sobre ruinas de la ciudad antigua de Atenas, y el piso de la entrada que te recibe es transparente, por el cual puedes observar la antigua Atenas, y de donde tomaron muchas de las piezas que son exhibidas en el museo. Así también por toda la ciudad puedes ver pisos transparentes mostrando algún hallazgo arqueológico, edificios sobre pequeñas iglesias, o edificios sobre fundaciones de “algo que existió”.
Otra forma de descubrir y disfrutar una ciudad es corriendo. Cuando corres por la mañana, antes de que el tráfico pesado inicie y las calles se aglomeren, tienes la oportunidad de recorrer un amplio territorio y de tener los lugares para disfrutarlos tu solo. Y el correr en Atenas a sido un gran placer. Fue aquí donde las Olimpiadas se inventaron, y el maratón vio su nacimiento. También, aquí en Atenas es donde los juegos olímpicos modernos se celebraron por primera vez y tiene un pequeño museo donde muestra todas las antorchas olímpicas y posters de donde se han celebrado las Olimpiadas desde 1896. Este museo esta localizado en el estadio Panathinaikó (o Kallimarmaro), el cual no hubiéramos descubierto de no ser por una de nuestras carreras matutinas.
Atenas no es solo ruinas y filósofos antiguos, y menos es una ciudad aburrida. Como todas las capitales de un país, es una ciudad moderna, y llena de vida; a la cual le debes agregar la belleza de sus calles, museos, parques y el SOL. Sí, el sol brilla de una manera impresionante reflejada en esta ciudad de mármol. Atenas, con sus ruinas y sus construcciones en mármol, tiene un ambiente diferente, y te hace sentir diferente, que en algún momento, parada en la Acropolis o en el Agora, con el simple hecho de ver las explicaciones en letras griegas me sentí más inteligente y me transportaron en el tiempo.
Y así, con tanta palabrería, por que venía al caso, respirando el aire que los antiguos sofistas respiraron, disfrutando de una tarde calurosa con un viento fresco que el Mar Egeo me regala, el sol reflejado en la Acropolis coronando toda la estampa, termino mi filosofar.

I was trying to write the article about Florence, but with the spectacular view I have, it is impossible to concentrate on another city; so we will talk about Athens.
Athens is a city that I dreamed about visiting. I was dying to know the place where philosophy was discovered; where Socrates, Aristotle, Plato, Parmenides, Heraclitus, and many others developed their thinking. I wanted to see the Acropolis, the Agora, walk those streets that made Pythagoras discover so many concepts, and know if a little of the city’s essence would stay with me.
What I see, what stays with me, what I discovered is: That even when some places are better known, and their history has been better recorded; what the Greeks discovered, what the Greeks named philosophy, is an exercise that human beings have developed at all times, but named differently. Something that continues to carry humanity forward, even if we do not want to give it its real name [Philosophy] and give it many different titles: science, physics, mathematics, technology. In the end, all these branches are the result of the curiosity of humans whom form their thought, studied it, give it form and present it with the name that best suits their results, but in the end, what is behind those results is human curiosity.
Perhaps my desire to visit this city began more than 10 years ago; when I started university, and the first courses we took in law school were those of ethics, Roman law, history of law, and others that I no longer remember. In these classes it was impossible not to make reference to Greek culture, and, of course, to Athens. Among the materials we read, I remember words like: The Republic, Sophists, Preliminary Lessons in Philosophy, Democracy, etc., and what is the logical feeling that follows after reading so much and learning so much about a place? Well, I would say, having the desire to know, discover, experience and feel that place.
Anyway, here I am, in this city, observing the Acropolis, the temple of Nike, the library of Adrian, the Agora; traveling the very streets that the philosophers walked, and writing; and I can not explain the feeling of happiness I have right now. So what I will do is to share with you how I feel.
As in all the cities we have visited, there is so much to say; as in all the cities we have visited, what surprises me the most is: in all places you find similarities, but at the same time, there are no two cities alike. This is logical, if we want to put it in terms discovered in Greece. And why logic? because cities also evolve, they also grow, they also live. Yes, they are like a living being, if you want to say, they are as a human being; therefore, although sharing characteristics that are essential to a city / human being, we will not find 2 equal ones.
Now, after playing a little and philosophizing, I will stop wandering with my feelings and thoughts and we will talk about this city.
The first thing you will see when you arrive in Athens is the Acropolis, and if all the buildings do not let you have this image, look for it! There are many rooftops that host cafes, restaurants or bars. It does not need to be an expensive place, and in Athens they are very good at letting you buy a coffee, and spend hours taking it, letting you just enjoying the view. Before we moved to the penthouse, we went to Thea bar only to see the Acropolis at sunset. It’s one of those images that I know will stay with me for the rest of my life.
Once you have enjoyed The Acropolis from afar, now buy your ticket to visit the archaeological sites of Athens and go to as many as you can.
There are many archaeological sites in Athens, and it is best to know which ones you want to see beforehand because even though it is a city for tourists, Athens is the capital of Greece and is a large city full of options that can be overwhelming if you do not have a plan. But if you’re more adventurous, and your style is never making plans, you’ll find history with every step you take. Just walking in the city you will notice the ingenuity and care with which Athens has grown in size, both horizontally and vertically, caring for the ruins that are scattered throughout the city.
The Acropolis Museum is a fine example of this respectful growth. The museum is built on ruins of the ancient city of Athens. The main entrance’s floor that receives you is transparent, so you can observe the ancient Athens laying under the modern building that hosts the museum. Also, many of the pieces that are exhibited in the museum where taken from this place under it. Throughout the city you can see transparent floors showing some archaeological findings, buildings on small churches, or buildings on foundations of «something that existed.»
Another way to discover and enjoy a city is by running. When you run in the morning, before the heavy traffic starts and the streets are crowded, you have the opportunity to travel a wide territory and have the places to enjoy them on your own. And running in Athens has been a great pleasure. It is here where the Olympics were invented, and the birth place of the marathon race, so you kind of want to feel fit. Also, here in Athens is where the modern Olympic Games were held for the first time, and a small museum holds all the Olympic torches and posters of the Olympics that have taken place since 1896. This museum is located in the Panathinaikó (or Kallimarmaro) stadium, which we would not have discovered were it not for one of our morning races.
Athens is not only ancient ruins and philosophers, and definitely it is not a boring city. Like all the capitals of a country, it is a modern city, full of life. The beauty of its streets, museums, parks and the Sun, yes, the sun add up to this marble city. Athens, with its ruins and its marble constructions, has a different atmosphere, and makes you feel different, that at some point, when at the Acropolis or the Agora, with the simple fact of looking at the explanations in Greek letters I felt more intelligent and transported me in time.
